Effective strategies for the treatment of migraines vary from person to person. You may need to try a variety of techniques before you find that those best for you. Many people treat migraine in a “progressive” manner, starting with non-medical strategies and progress to medication when their pain is not relieved.
(See information below on Over-the-counter and prescription drugs comes from clinical guidelines developed by the U.S. Headache Consortium, a collaboration between several medical organizations.)
Non-medical strategies
Lying in a quiet, dark room, the pain of migraine, there are often accompanied by intense sensitivity to light and noise. Relaxation techniques, listen to bands such as meditation and deep breathing, you can fall asleep, can interrupt the cycle of migraine. Some people find the cold packs on the head, face, neck, or even help.
Herbal Treatments
Feverfew or Bachelor’s button, is increasingly popular as a treatment for migraine. Most people suggest that it is best used on a regular basis to prevent migraine, as opposed to a reliable abortive treatment.
Over-the-counter pain medications
NSAIDs, which are for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. All are effective in the treatment of migraine headaches. Aspirin Effervescent Tablets is a particularly effective means for the control of pain in migraine. Some people also find that consumption of caffeine in chocolate, coffee, cola or reduces the intensity of their headaches.
Combined over-the-counter drugs, Acetaminophen (known as paracetamol outside the United States), aspirin and caffeine are also effective in migraine aborted. Some evidence that this combination of drugs is more effective as a triptan-prescription drugs to give aborted the pain of migraine.
NSAIDs have significant side effects, including upset stomach and possible kidney damage. Frequent use can also lead to “rebound” headaches. Guidelines suggest that the use of non-steroidal anti-should not be used for headache pain for more than twice a week.
Triptanubergebrauch drugs
These class of drugs binds to serotonin receptors in the blood vessels of the brain, which constrict and reduce the release of inflammatory substances. Triptanubergebrauch drugs that the U.S. Headache Consortium recommends for first-line treatment of migraine are:
• Sumatriptan (Imitrex ®)
• Naratriptan (Amergen ®, Naramig ®)
• Zolmitriptan (Zomig ®), and
• Rizatriptan (Maxalt ®)
Newer triptans are also available, including Eletriptan (Relpax ®) Almotriptan (Axert ®, Almogran ®), and Frovatriptan (Frova ®, Migard ®). Studies evaluating their effectiveness is still in progress, as these data are available, these drugs can be expected that the other triptans in the Headache Consortium’s “A” list.
Triptans are available in the U.S. only by prescription and are much more expensive than either over-the-counter medications or drugs ergot. Frequent use of triptans can cause rebound headaches, and side effects can be facial flushing, tingling, dizziness or a sudden feeling of warmth
Ergot drugs
Ergotamine-containing medications, such as Cafergot ®, have a long history of use in the treatment of migraine. Ergotamine also binds to serotonin receptors in the blood vessels, thereby narrowing. Some experts suggest that ergot drugs should be used as a rectal suppository, because absorption is better.
Ergotamine-containing drugs are available only by prescription. Frequent use can cause rebound headaches, and upset stomach side effects may or vomiting.
