Author: kensnow

Many people say they know everything there is to know about writing a newspaper article, and they say they can teach you how to do it in a short period of time. And there are many Web tools for nearly any type of feature article you might want to write. However, unless you’re writing an article about something relatively simple, there really is no short cut in learning to write. There is much more involved with writing a newspaper article than you might think.

There is an art to writing, and like learning any art, you have to be dedicated and persistent to become proficient. And you can’t write anewspaper article without learning to write a good, solid sentence first. It’s surprising how many people will just write on and on when they could communicate what they want to say in just a few well-chosen words. If you want to get an article into a newspaper, you’ll have to avoid this run-on kind of writing because no editor in the world will accept your piece if it shows signs of rambling. Editors look for concise writing that uses as few words as possible to get the point across. Here’s a tip. Once you think you’ve finished your feature article, go back and cut out at least one-third of it. You’ll be surprised how many words you’ve written are unnecessary, and this approach will ensure that your article will be accepted the first time you submit it to the editor.

Newspaper writing is not the only kind of writing that might interest you, but all types of writing require skill. For example, you might think that writing advertising copy will be easy. However, you still need to apply the principles of good, solid writing to this field. If you want to write advertising copy, you still need to learn how to do it. You can’t just dive into it and expect to succeed when you don’t know what you’re doing.

Whatever you decide to write, there are some steps that you should always follow. First, take your time and make sure your writing is clear and concise. If you are writing for a newspaper, go back over your writing and cut it by one-third. When you’re finished, have someone that you trust read it over to check for spelling and grammar errors as well as to see if it flows well. Then you’ll have a better idea of whether or not your article is good.

Do you ever feel like everybody is speaking in a different language and you have no idea what about? Remember the time when your super-smart colleague tried to make conversation with you? You could do nothing more than stare blankly at her before making a beeline for the restroom because you had no idea what she was talking about.

We all have our bad days when we feel left out from the conversation because we have not been keeping up with all the things happening in the world. Well, thanks to the rise of the World Wide Web, even if you find yourself lagging behind in information pertaining to some department, you can always catch up without too much effort. How so? Well, you could try looking up some news & information archives.

Earlier, you had to visit the news & information archives that were run by the government, and these were not always the easiest of places to move around in. But thanks to the rise of archives on the Internet, all you need to do is punch in a couple of keys and watch yourself face to face with a long list of news & information archives. Not only do the news & information archives on the Internet make your search for news and information very quick, but they also save you a trip to those musty old archives of hard copy.

Would you say that we are becoming lazier and more and more spoilt thanks to the ease of using the Internet? Perhaps we are, but do you really care? Isn’t it brilliant how we are able to sit at a desk and view the happenings in the world. Moreover, if you are looking for specific news and information, all you need to do is specify what kind of an archive you are looking for. So you could find an archive of only news stories or an archive of information on population or economics or gadget developments.

News & information archives also help us channel our research. We no longer have to sift through hordes of information that will be of no use to us. It is easier, quicker and a whole lot more convenient.

Keep yourself updated by reading up news articles pertaining to the days when you did not have the time. So the next time that you find a discussion that you would like to be a part of, you will be prepared to join in with gusto!

Now bigger than life and ultimately credible, there is no literate person on earth who has not heard of Newsweek Magazine. However, before all the awards and accolades along with the public trust it has gained, there is a colorful history which marks the rise of a small publication to one that will sweep the world off its feet.

On February 17, 1933, the first issue of this news magazine was far from the colorful and astounding publication we all read today. All it had on the cover were seven pictures from the headlines of that week. Inside, were interpretative stories, signed columns and other international editions. As time progressed and the readership got bigger, the News-Week magazine founded by Thomas J.C Martin became bigger by the second.

In 1937, new leadership gave the news magazine a much needed boost. It all happened when Malcolm Muir took charge as editor in Chief and President of the publication. One of his first moves was top change the news magazines name to Newsweek, abolishing the hyphen, which made the name look too complicated. After that, the popularity of Newsweek Magazine became quite phenomenal. In ten years, this news magazine grew into what can be perceived as a classic replica of what it has become today.

In fact, it became so big, that the Washington Post Company purchased Newsweek in 1961. It is during that time that it cemented its status as one of the most liberal publications of the era. Its growth continued until it became the big fish that it has become today.

Through the years, Newsweek has also has accumulated quite a number of controversies. Some of the more groundbreaking and sometimes, earth rattling articles received mixed reactions. Some of them were controversial exposes on Guantanamo Bay Islamic injustice, the best high schools in America and other war stories. These heated, controversial and impressively liberal stories on war focused on American waged wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As of now, Newsweek stands mightily on the pedestal of journalistic success. It is known to reach worldwide circulation of no less than four million copies a year, including 3.1 million copies syndicated in the U.S alone. It also employs multilingual publishing practices as shown in their Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian and Arabic editions. It also operates with more than 17 bureaus reaching as far as Paris and Tokyo. It has even produced its own Radio show called Newsweek on Air.

There is no telling what lies in store for the behemoth of the publishing world. Whatever this leader in the news industry decides to embark on next will undoubtedly be ahead of the rest of the pack.

Autor: luvtohunt

During the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban which ended in 2004 was a section which prohibited the manufacture and import of high capacity magazines. High Capacity was determined to be anything over 10 rounds. The reasoning offered behind this ridiculous ideology was criminals would have access to “Never Ending” supplies of ammunition which would make them much more dangerous since they would have to reload less. High Capacity magazines were demonized as “ammo dumps” or “massive feed devices”. However, everything surrounding this was false as was the premise of increasing safety by limiting these “dangerous weapons”.

Myth #1: The Clinton Assault Weapons Ban outlawed the ownership of High Capacity
Magazines thus creating a Safer Nation as criminal would no longer have
access to large ammo supplies.

Answer: This is inherently false. The Clinton Assault weapons ban only prohibited the manufacture and importation of high capacity magazines. Private ownership of high capacity magazines was not affected. Magazines present in the US before the ban were allowed to be bought, owned, and sold like any other commodity albeit at a much higher price now that supply was “limited”. Criminals could still access them easily in any sporting goods stores.

Myth #2: The Ban on High Cap magazines made streets safer because criminals could
only fire 10 rounds before reloading.

Answer: I already covered magazines were still available for everyone so I won’t rehash with another explanation. Here is something I always told people who were proponents of the law. Stand out in field while I shoot at you with a 10 round magazine and 30 round magazine. Can you tell the difference? What makes the bottom 10 or 20 rounds of a high capacity magazine so much more deadly than the top 10? It is true, with the 10 round mag, reloading does take a little more time, but with a little practice, a gun can go from empty to full in under a second. It takes someone more time to realize the gun is unloaded than it takes a practiced person to reload it. The fact is, it is just a bunch of bull.

Unfortunately, after the Ban expired, the ideology lived in liberal states such as Hawaii, California, and Massachusetts as each state passed laws prohibiting the OWNERSHIP of such magazines. That is right, you cannot own one of these magazines in California. How has the crime rate gone in Los Angeles since its inception? Even liberal organizations like Ebay and Google will not allow the sale or advertising of firearms or high capacity magazines based on the very unscientific and highly dis-proven belief they are the cause of evil in hearts of criminals everywhere.

If you look for a magazine that serves the political centre, while providing exceptional news coverage, consider subscribing to Newsweek.

Being one of the top weekly news magazines for years, Newsweek has always been a mainstream magazine featuring consistent weekly columns and excellent writing. Originally published in 1933 in New York, Newsweek is the second most well-liked news magazine in the United States, after TIME magazine, selling over 4 million copies in 12 global editions.

Newsweek is savvy, insightful, and entertaining covering a quite broad range of topics, current events, arts and entertainment and cultural trends. With its broad coverage of national and international affairs, politics, economics, business, science, technology, health, arts, entertainment and society, Newsweek is a valuable tool for busy people by providing a great weekly synopsis of the weekly news.

If you are a news junkie, Newsweek is full of up to date information in each issue. The first four feature articles cover current events emphasizing heavily on political stories and international events. The Iraq War, Barack Obama, the Darfur Crisis, Ted Kennedy and Anna Nicole Smith were some of the recent topics. Covering 2-3 pages length, all those articles are politically correct providing the appropriate information without overwhelming the reader, while allowing the analysis of the important issues.

The cover story is usually tackling the most important story of the week. However, it could also be about an utterly intriguing topic that people are not aware of or know too little about it. Newsweek has been featuring in its cover story topics related to religion (Radical Islam), gender (Rethinking Gender), pain (The New War on Pain), and even cosmology (Unbeliever’s Quest Scientist Carl Sagan).

Although these may be controversial topics, still they are written in an excellent, objective way, by veteran, well experienced journalists, who have made Newsweek a winning award magazine. Fareed Zakaria with his expertise on international affairs; Jonathan Alter with his knowledge on politics; George Will with his intelligent commentary echoing a conservative point of view; Anna Quindlen with liberal, empathetic columns.

Newsweek features also some regular columns. Conventional Wisdom is a snapshot of the hottest jokes and gaffes by politicians and journalists, while Periscope contains articles on multiple subjects. Also, My Turn and Letters measure the pulse of ordinary readers, who contribute with their opinion to the public discussion.

On the other hand though, as the majority of mainstream magazines, Newsweek’s journalism is rather soft. Instead of asking hard questions or investigating thoroughly anything that would set national elected officials’ feet to the fire, Newsweek reporters pose soft questions to politicians thus keeping away from their legitimate duty to outline political issues.

In addition, the stories enclosed in Newsweek are typically too brief for the sake of squeezing as many as possible into each issue. However, putting more stories that cover complex issues insufficiently at the expense of less stories that would cover all issues sufficiently results in confusing the readers. Because of that, usually commendable job in tackling complex issues is misjudged due to lack of space.

Personally, I find Newsweek a quite good news-related magazine that straddles the middle political ground with the inclusion of articles from both liberal and conservative standpoints. Being my one-stop information source, Newsweek not only keeps me alert and informed, but it also challenges me to re-evaluate and support my beliefs without seeking to emphasize on them. Featuring in-depth reports with varied viewpoints as well as stimulating articles and compelling columns Newsweek stimulates me and educates me.

In addition to its level of even sided coverage, Newsweek features extremely interesting and informative articles. The latest I recall was about enough positive stories to prevent any occurences of heartburn. So, if you want to stay informed on national and global events, subscribe to Newsweek. With a yearly subscription price of only $25, Newsweek magazine is good for the whole family encompassing the weekly developments of the US and the world.

There are many quality children’s magazines, as well as magazines their parents may be interested in on topics like parenting, home décor, cooking and more. Some can be found in stores and on newsstands, while others may be easier to find when it is mailed directly to their door.

Subscriptions allow you to save money on your chosen magazine. By paying for an entire year in advance, the publishers give you a break on the cover price you would pay if you picked your favorite magazine up in the local shop. Some can save you up to 50% off the cover price.

For this great deal, you get your magazines delivered right to your door. If you decide that you are no longer interested in the magazine, you can cancel your subscription when it runs out, or if you still like the publication, you can easily renew.

Subscribing is easy. Just fill in the form that is included with any copy you buy. If you subscribe online, there will be a form to fill out online. Popular children’s magazines include Kids Discover, Disney Magazine, Action Comics and Nickelodeon. Teens often are interested in magazines like Seventeen, Shonen Jump, American Cheerleader or a magazine that caters to a particular interest like Sports Illustrated or Horse & Rider.

College students may be interested in news magazines like Time or Newsweek, or maybe they may prefer magazines focused on their college major. Try and choose gift subscriptions that are something the recipient will really like. Ask their friends or family members if you are not sure of their interests. Alternatively, you can ask the person you want to give the subscription to what kind of things they like to read. This is much better than snooping around, trying to figure out what they like. They may consider this an invasion of privacy.

Magazines are always in style. Unlike clothing, you can’t get the wrong size. Every month your gift is given again, with new, interesting things to read. Magazine publishers and editors work hard to keep their magazines up to date and new. Sometimes back issues are also available in case you miss a topic you really wanted to learn about.

Many people enjoy magazine subscriptions as gifts, as they always have something to look forward to. If you plan on giving more subscriptions, just find out what their interests and hobbies are so you have an idea of what to choose.

For example, many people love cars. Maybe they love the look of new sportscars, or maybe they prefer the old, classic hot rods. Either way, your problem is easy. Simply choose the one you think they will enjoy most out of all the different car magazines available.

A magazine subscription is a good gift because you get to help someone learn about something they are interested in. It may be related to their career, or to their hobby. Either way, you are getting good value for your money and they are getting good information about something they enjoy. It is the perfect gift.

Fibromyalgia (FM) has a broad spectrum of symptoms and overlapping conditions! It is easy to mistake a condition or symptom for another. FM, together with others relating to these factors, is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood.
FM is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and weakness. The American College of Rheumatology has been a guideline for the diagnosis in 1990. It is defined as the 11-18 tender points throughout the body. When your doctor examines you for FM, he / she is looking for these painful little points of contact and response to pain. These tender points are mainly in the muscles around the neck, shoulders, chest, knees, the region around the elbows, and hips.
I was diagnosed in 1995, but lived with FM for many years before I was finally a name for them. It was a relief in a way, because my pain and fatigue was finally validated, but I did not know what I was in for. Later I realized, many other conditions, I had been associated with FM. The list just kept growing!
FM patients’ symptoms may differ in quantity and degree. It is never exactly the same as the next person. You may have, or have you all (I hope it’s the former), but all the information below relates to fibromyalgia.
Apart from the obvious muscle pain and weakness, the symptoms of fibromyalgia include: allergies, imbalances (problems with balance), dizziness, clumsiness, extreme fatigue, sleep disturbance starts (falling sensation), insomnia, sleep disorders such as apnea, headache, increased menstrual cycle pain, sensory sensitivity, sensitive skin, itching, histamine-like reactions demographic, morning stiffness, strength when walking, blotchy skin, carbohydrate cravings (sweets, too), fungal infections (Candida), tissue trigger, nail ridges, curved nails, ingrown hair, light scarring, anxiety, stress, crying easily, panic attacks, mood swings, sudden irritability, excessive sweating, more than the average infection, vibration or shock, bruising (more than the average person), weight gain or loss, bruxism (nocturnal teeth grinding), numbness and tingling , sinusitis, runny nose (often), ear pain, trouble swallowing, eye pain, sensitivity to certain materials (clothing, bed linen), heartburn, indigestion, weak grasp, breathlessness, tightness in the chest, rapid heartbeat, painful intercourse, impotence, low back pain, burning feet, dry eyes and mouth, hormonal fluctuations, delayed reactions to over exertion or stress, muscle twitch, swelling, mold & yeast sensitivity, pain, frequent urination, abdominal pain, cramps, bloating and nausea.
FM patients are probably familiar with the phrase “FIBRO fog.” It refers to the symptoms of FM, based on cognitive dysfunction, memory problems, difficulty concentrating, words consisting of mixing, the problems with decisions, problems, spelling words that you know, scattered thoughts.
If this is not enough, we can other debilitating illnesses, diseases or syndromes: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Chronic Myofascial Pain (CMP) (formally known as Myofascial Pain Syndrome), migraine (in all forms), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), interstitial cystitis (IC) or painful bladder, mitral valve prolapse (MVP), temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), insulin resistance (IR), Acid Reflux – GERD, reactive hypoglycemia (RHG), depression and anxiety .
That’s enough, they all want to go to bed and stay there! I had my moments – believe me! Sometimes, it seems intolerable, and that I can no longer be a second, but I must go and so do you! Take it day by day and make the most of your good day. At the end of a bad – they can say it through another day and tomorrow may be better!
I will continue this article series and will cover all aspects of fibromyalgia and all questions, etc., associated therewith.

Healthy Beliefs, Support Network May Be Part of the Reason Why

Religion appears to soothe the body as well as the soul, as people who are highly religious tend to live longer than others, a review of more than 40 scientific studies has found.

In fact, overall, the people who were most involved in their religions were 29% more likely to be alive when the various studies were completed than were their nonreligious counterparts.

Exactly how religious involvement boosts health is unclear, the researchers say. But given the findings, they write, future research should focus on the precise way that religion extends life. The report was published in the journal Health Psychology.

“Some people believe that religious involvement instills healthy beliefs and behaviors,” Michael E. McCullough, PhD, who did the research while at the National Institute for Healthcare Research in Rockville, Md., tells WebMD. For example, religious people tend to smoke and drink less, and may be slightly less obese than nonreligious people.

“They also receive a lot of positive social support that helps them to cope with stress,” says McCullough, who is now an associate professor of psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Finally, “religion helps people to develop a coherent set of beliefs about the world that help them to make sense of their stress and suffering,” he says. “All of these factors are probably at least partially responsible for the links between religious involvement and health.”

And that’s good news for the more than 90% of American adults who are affiliated with some type of formal religion, and the nearly 96% who believe in God or a universal spirit.

The review examined 42 studies of the link between religious involvement and mortality, involving a total of 126,000 people. Researchers collected information on how often participants attended church or temple, whether they were a member of a religious organization, and how much time they spent engaged in religious activities. They also assessed “private religious involvement,” which included how religious the participants said they were, the frequency with which they prayed in private, and their use of religion as a coping mechanism.

“There are a number of possible ways that religion can be self-enhancing,” says Redford Williams, MD, director of the behavioral medicine research center at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., and author of the book Lifeskills.

“At least part of what is going on is social support,” he tells WebMD. “The health-enhancing effects of social support are well-documented and someone who is participating with others on an ongoing basis will gain that benefit,” he says, noting that people who regularly participate in religious activities often interact with others.

Another positive effect of religion on health may come from following the core teachings of major religions, including Judaism, Christianity, and some of the Eastern religious philosophies, he suggests.

For example, the teachings of many religions — such as treating others the way you would like to be treated, and loving your neighbor — make a person less likely to have stressful relations with others, Williams says.

Anthony Dekker, DO, associate director of the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, part of the Indian Health Service in Phoenix, Ariz., says he credits spirituality with helping people “live longer, live better, and die better.”

Dekker sees only Indian patients, and says as many as 90% of them are deeply spiritual.

“Spirituality is a critical aspect of quality of life and quality of dying,” he says.

Vital Information

People who are involved with religion tend to live longer, overall, than their nonreligious counterparts.

It’s unclear exactly why, but research suggests it may be partly a result of increased social support from other members of the religious organization.

Another possible factor is that core beliefs of major religions tend to encourage healthy lifestyles and foster positive social interactions.

I’d like to begin by wishing all my loyal readers a Happy New Year. Much health, happiness and, of course, success! It’s that time of the year again; the time when it seems everyone is trying to keep their New Year’s resolutions.

Some people want to join a gym and lose 20 pounds; others will try to quit smoking yet again. Some will promise to eat less chocolate or read more books. Whatever one’s resolution, it is not likely to be kept unless we work at it every single day.

step by step

For those of you that have more meaty resolutions: getting a promotion to divisional manager, increasing your company’s sales by 100% this year, putting your competitor out of business, increasing your market share, finding the woman of your dreams, etc., you will need to devise a plan if you want to get things done.

The point is that whatever you set your mind to, it won’t happen on its own and it will definitely not happen overnight, unless of course your resolution was to sleep all night! If you want to make your New Year’s resolutions come true, you will have to give them some serious thought and effort every day of the year.

The bigger the project, the less likely it is that you will be able to do everything at once. Let’s suppose your goal for the New Year is to earn more money — at least 10% more. You can’t just walk into the office and get that 10%; you’ll have to take steps to earn it.

persistence and consistency

Let’s suppose you work in sales, and you’re therefore paid on commission. One of the basic principles of selling is that the more doors you knock on, the more potential sales you will make.

If you are currently able to make 6 successful sales calls a day, or 30 sales calls a week, you would have to increase the number of calls by at least 10% to have a shot at increasing your revenue proportionally. Thus if you need to make 60 calls to get 6 successful ones, then you would have to make an extra 30 calls a week to meet your goal. That is, you’d make an average of about 5 additional calls per day to attain your 10% increase.

Why am I going into such detail, you ask? To illustrate the point that you will have to make an effort to reach your goals. Furthermore, you won’t be able to just make an extra 30 calls on Monday then forget about them for the rest of the week. You will have to give a consistent additional effort every single day to make it big.

What’s the best way to attain everything you want?

day by day

The best way to achieve anything big in life, perhaps the only way, is to take things step by step. Going back to our example above, you won’t just start calling more people every day. Before doing so, you will have to find the sales leads, study your prospects, come up with a tailored sales pitch, introduce yourself, get to know them and their needs, and only then can you pitch them your products (or services or ideas for that matter).

Thus, there is a lot of preparation and legwork that is involved and the best way to handle the workload is to work at it a little bit every day so as to not be overwhelmed. At first, you may only be able to make an additional 2 sales per day as you build and adjust to your new workload. As you get better, you’ll become more efficient and will be able to make the extra calls every day. Eventually, you will achieve your goal.

don’t get discouraged

Nothing that is worth achieving in this world will come easy. Get ready to put your nose to the grindstone and sweat it out because the road ahead is always roughest for the trailblazers.

You have to learn to build on every little victory because each win acts like fuel to your confidence and ability to achieve bigger and better things. If you start off slow and can’t convert that many sales calls to actual sales, don’t get down on yourself. Instead, figure out why things aren’t going as well as you’d like and come up with a modified plan.

Use the new plan and attack with full force. Keep doing this until you hit the nail on the head. It may take days, weeks, months, or even years before you get it right, but eventually you will get it right if you keep trying. Remember, Edison failed to create the light bulb thousands of times before getting it right!

recipe for success

Taking things step by step applies to any resolutions you’ve made. Suppose you were a little on the skinny side and wanted to gain 20 lbs of solid muscle. You wouldn’t be able to do it in one week. You would have to come up with a training routine, eating regimen and sleep schedule to get you started. You would have to decide how much you could gain each week and then devote each day to achieving part of your goal.

As you workout 4-5 times per week you will start noticing small changes in your body. After 2 months the changes will be very visible; after 6 months of steady training the results will be dramatic. The trick is to train your body a little at a time. You can’t just walk into a gym and bench press 300 lbs. You have to start at 150 lbs and work your way up. This same rule applies to any endeavor you choose to begin.

Remember, take it step by step, build on your small victories and never quit. Good luck & Happy New Year!
